Hi,

I'd like to know if SS316L is suitable for use for a distillation column bottom given following conditions:

Inlet Flow (tower middle) - 712 Kg/hr at
* Temperature - 85 degC ,
* Process Stream Composition - water 56%, Methanol 19.9%, Glycerol 21.8%, NaCl 1.2%, Fatty Matter 1.1%.

Outlet flow (tower bottom) - 594.93 Kg/hr at
* Temperature - 105 degC.
* Process Stream composition - water 69.9%, Methanol 0.1%, Glycerol 27.2%, NaCl 1.5%, Fatty Matter 1.3%.

Ph of inlet and bottom outlet streams is 6-7.

Possible Corrosive matter : Chlorides and fatty matter( fatty acids)

Thanks in advance.

Since you have NaCl and water in your tower, I would recommend looking for a different material. Chloride stress cracking will be an issue.

Have you considered a CS column with PTFE lining?
