Hi there,

My name is Colin. I am a final year student from Scotland. The project I am involved in just now requires that I do the basic first stage design of the shift reactor stage of a hydrogen production facility. The only problem is that I am a structural engineering student so I have very little idea what I am doing. I know roughly what is going on and have managed to ascertain the composition of the system at various stages using basic chemistry and the equations CH4 + H20 --- 3(H2)+ CO and CO + H2O----- H2 + CO2. Could you lads possibly tell me how to size the HTS and LTS as well as relative costs. The plant we have to design is pretty big It has an input of 70million scf of natural gas each day so costing the plant is proving to be difficult from comparison to other plants.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks Chris

Sorry forgot to mention the other headache I have just now is the waste heat boiler, which was how I came across this site in the first place.

Thanks again

Hi Colin

Please refer to the following link, I hope that it will be useful for you in your Wadt Heat Boiler Design

Thanks,

The information you pointed me too is useful, but Im still a little confused. There a lot of equations which sound useful but which contain aspects I have no full knowlwdge of. Basically all I need for my report is to state how large it will be and roughly what it will cost. The flow composition is

Stage 2 Volume % by Mass % by
(Nm3) Volume (kg) Mass

Methane 1268594.56 79.86364468 862644.3008 21.46692051
Ethane 63429.728 3.993182234 81316.9113 2.023572948
Propane 31714.864 1.996591117 60575.3902 1.507419786
H2O 2707.421069 0.170444144 2707421.069 67.37422694
Hydrogen 0 0 0 0
Nitrogen 158574.32 9.982955586 187910.5692 4.676158237
Carbon Monoxide 0 0 0 0 Carbon Dioxide 63429.728 3.993182234 118613.5914 2.951701571

at the outlet of the reformer. With the temp being 900 oC and the pressure being roughly 40 bar. Do you have any Idea how to use this little information to size a boiler. I am also having a lot of difficulty trying to ascertain the volume of catalyst required for the HTS and LTS. Costing these units is also very difficult.

Again if you can help this would be amasing

Thanks

Col
