In trying to simulate the dynamic behavior of heat exchangers, we are coming across an unusual result. For a step increase in the inlet temperature of the hot fluid, the simulated response shows a gradual increase in the outlet temperature of the cold fluid, as expected, however, the hot fluid outlet temperature shows an initial dip before increasing to a final steady state value. The heat balances work out for the new steady state, but we are at a loss to explain the initial decrease. Is this a real decrease or merely an artifact of our program. Other than a programming error, is there any other possible explanation?
