Hello,
Plz, I'd like to know the necessity of the isomerization unit to produce a useful gasoline, and is it necessary to improve the octane number?
thank you.

Isomerization unit converts n-C5 and n-C6 to i-C5 and i-C6 which have higher octane number.
There are different types of isomerization plants (mostly different configuration and recycles) but all of them are improving octane number of light naphtha (mostly comprised of C5 and C6). light naphtha (LSRG) has the octane number of maximum 70 which is not suitable for gasoline blending pool. the isomerate (isomerization product) has higher octane number (e.g. 90), which is suitable for gasoline blending pool.

Dear Linda1978,

isomerization has another advantage in mogas pool: aromatics aren't present in its product .
so isomerate decreases the aromatic contemt of reformate allowing to meet the max aromatic content requested by gasoline specs.
moreover, isomerate is light (ie low density): its addition to mogas pool gives a price advantange, since gasoline is sold by volume.

Yes. Isomerates are required for RFG (Reformulated Gasoline) which contain lower aromatics for environmental protection.

Dear Gegio and P.K.Rao,
thank you for your help.

Peace Khaled,
I'd like to add one last feature for isom, is that it provides a good quality product (isomerate), because its sensibility is lower than other gasoline pool components (which is prefered). Therefore, the isomerate would almost behave the same at different temperatures, especially those which are high.
Regards
