Good morning,

I want to rate a heat exchanger performance. However i have a small baffles spacing and different conception of this baffles, which cause an important  shell pressure drop.

Would you please help me to understand this  heat exchanger conception.

You can find attached the mechanical conception scheme and the technical sheet.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Amellalou,

That baffle arrangement is not unusual. They are called double segmental baffles. You can find a description in the Heat Exchanger Design Handbook in section 3.3.11-2. In your case the baffle spacing is in the normal range.

Hi,

Which program you are using to rate the exchanger? As mentioned by 'srfish', this is a double segmental baffle style with vertical or parallel cut. These details are mentioned in the rating sheet however while entering into the program, i will recommend to use the details from general arrangement drawing which is also attached in your post. The spacing and baffle % cut and orientation is important, and additional parameter in case of double segmental baffle is number rows overlap.

It is surprising to see vertical baffle cut in case of shell side gas fluid, look at 'detail-C' in the drawing, this is called as 'Dog-Ear Baffle' to avoid short-circuit or bypass (stream - E : you can search for shell side stream analysis and various streams like A, B, C, E and F).
