Mr. Rahimzadeh,

As far as i know there is no special standard for necessity of using start up strainer in centrifugal pumps suction line; but in general a temporary cone type strainer is usually applied...

Hi ,

Let you google "temporary strainer" , this is part of good practices at the start up to prevent damage to the rotating equipment.

The local slang (my company/U.S.) for these temporary strainers is a "witches hat".

Dear,

Normally start up strainer is used to avoid damage to rotary equipment internals & seals. During start up time we get the maximum foreign materials like debris, welding slag, rust, construction items like nut & bolts, gloves etc even after cleaning of the system. As per my experience normally we fixed 40 mesh Stainless steel mesh inside of the permanent strainer and after sufficient length of operation we need to remove once we confirm that nothing much is coming.

Regards,

Manoj

is there any standard about this?

see API 686

"2.3.3 Any temporary or permanent strainer shall be located between the inlet isolation block valve and the machinery inlet connection"

There are a lot of rules and recommendations in API 686. For types and drawings of  temporary strainer see fig B.6.

This is good (if not a MUST) practice to have one as the suction manifold can contain anything during start up (one cannot fully rely on pneumatic cleaning of lines to remove all debris inside a pipe).
