Hi

I am tasked with the design of a batch type catalyst plant. We have multiple mixing vessels and I am currently sizing a mixing vessels. I have a query on selecting the nozzle location for the vessel.

Solid Feed nozzle, Vent and PSV are selected on top head. Drain and outlet nozzle are selected on bottom head.

I have couple of inlet(feed) nozzles, hot and cold DM water connections for which I need to finalize the location.

There is no external heating coil or jacket. Agitator is present.

My operating conditions: pressure: Atmospheric, Temp: 30 deg C.

Feed: One solid inlet, DM water and phosphoric acid will be mixed to prepare a solution.

Given a choice and no other process constraint what is the preferred nozzle location- Vessel Head or on the Vessel.

Which is costlier? make a hole on head or on shell.

Hello Sparsha,

It is advisable to place the nozzle on the shell in general.

The knuckled dish heads are already usually the most stressed portion of the vessel, and any boring or welding over there would only increase it further. Cost is not the only factor, and even though it is possible to place them on the head, it is more advisable to place the nozzles on the main shell, but not always necessary.
