SItuation:

Phenol forms an azeotrope with aniline. Firstly, I have searched almost all articles and the internet, none have any information on the separation of this azeotrope. However, based on my understanding, i am proposing to use extractive distillation in this case. I already have a simulation program, Design II, it detects the azeotrope and does not separate it using the shortcut method.

So, I was wondering, just wad data do I really need to input and prepare beforehand so that i can separate this azeotrope effectively?

I understand the use of vapor liquid equilibrium to determine the azeotrope composition and temperature. Understand what residue curve maps are, but do not know what information i could actually extract from the RCM. In short, I believe i am stuck. From my research, I am not quite sure that there are any books with information regarding phenol/aniline azeotrope. So does anyone have any info on this azeotrope? Do update me. Thanks for ur help =)

Hey!

hysys seems to show that the rel volatility between phenol and aniline is very small... (looks more difficult to separate than propane-propene). I have attached a y-x plot and i am sure there is no azeo acc to hysys.

For extractive distilaltion, look at Conceptual design of distillation systems by Doherty and Malone. this is (afaik) the only book which has any detail for such designs.

For starters you need to know what entrainer/extractiove agent you shall require for the system.

wow thanks a bunch!!

yeah.. i know that an entrainer/solvent will be required. I have looked up robbins chart from Perry and kinda determined that the solvent to be used is Solvent class 5 or 10. (5. Ketone, amide with no H on N, sulfone, phosphine oxide and 10. Ester, aldehyde, carbonate, phosphate, nitrate, nitrile, intramolecular bonding) In addition, the boiling point of the entrainer will have to be at least 30deg C higher rite?

sorry for sounding kind of noob, may i know how you actually obtained those values in ur attached file? kinda seem like a x=y plot to me..

seems like it really is a difficult problem to solve. Even my lecturer is having difficulties. haha

anyway thanx for the attachment =)

Hey!

Now this bewilders me smile.gif

attached is a y-x plot generated by Aspen Plus. This shows a wonderful example of an azeotrope.

If you tell me what entrainer you would want to use, i may be able to give you a ternary plot (depending on how aspen makes it) which will help you solve the problem.

Frankly, there is NO other way to do it easily other than using Aspen. I have used Hysys and have found it to be NOT so reliable smile.gif

Take care...

Alright, regarding the entrainer, I am proposing to use benzyl-ethanoate.

Thanks for helping =) anyway, may i know how i can get Aspen?

Hey!

attached below is a ternary plot for the system you proposed. Please refer to doherty malone's conceptual design for solutions to your problem.

Also.. if u want access to aspen, speak to your lecturer. he will have a fair idea. also, try to catch up with someone in the industry.
