Hello all! My query is on distillation blending.

 

Let us consider that we have 5 different streams (petroleum cuts) with following individual details:

- Sp. Gvt

- ASTM D86 data (vol%)

- Flowrate (mass / weight)

 

My particular query is: HOW TO GET THE BLEND POOL ASTM D86 DISTILLATION USING EXCEL? I do not want to use commercial simulators as those will not be available on all platforms.

 

Please guide!

the simplest rule. adopted in simple/old/linear LP models, is the linear blending by vol at equal temperatures.

of course, this rule creates troubles (especially) for the initial and final pieces of the curves.

time to time, I used to check the linear vol blending with the data from lab/simulator to find few simple adaptive parameters to the most critical point/components.

I understand that blending distillation curves is a bit complicated and different people follow different methods. Correct me if I am wrong in the approach deliberated below:
 
Generate vol% TBP curve for all streams. 
 
To generate vol% TBP curve of the blend, do the following:
 
IBP: Take minimum IBP among all the cuts
 
FBP: Take maximum FBP among all the cuts
 
For all other points take volume average.
 
Please check this approach and correct me. 
 
Furthermore, I had read somewhere that there are methods by Maxwell and/or Edmister for this particular blending query. Can you update on the same please?

we're speaking of astm d86, not of tbp.

as already stated, you can adopt the linear volumetric blending at your risk until you don't check the results vs lab data (or good simulation results).

if you find other correlations you can submit them for comments.

Attached you receive. An excel file, which is designed for mixing the hydrocarbon distillation curves.
 

Carefully read the information on the Mix TBP tab until you understand the procedure.
The large formulas are for limiting the temperature ranges and linearly interpolating the corresponding data.
