Hi, I am trying to understand the functioning of a flow control valve. lets say i have 1 mmscfd flow in a line and i want to control that flow and send 0.5 mmscfd to a combustion unit. This operation can be done using a control valve or flow control valve?

Please go through fisher control valve book online

If you want to control the flow use FCV. but you need to tell us the inlet unit and the conditions there.

Either your thinking or your communications are all mixed up.  Please examine what you wrote.

You cannot logically "have 1 MMscfd flow in a line and .... control that flow and send 0.5 MMscfd to a combustion unit".  That doesn't make any sense.

What you probably want to state is that you want to control a flow of 0.5 MMscfd to a burner unit.  It is that flow that you control - not the 1.0 MMscfd or any other flow.  Do you agree?  If you correctly control the gas flow, the 1.0 MMscfd is irrelevant.

PYG,

your argument about amount of flow is little confusing (1 mmscfd or 0.5 mmscfd)

But in the end you ask a question whether it is controlled by control valve or flow control valve?

Please understand that it is basically control valve which will control the desired parameter in operations.

Based on which parameter is to be controlled, nomenclature of control valve is further extended.

e.g. for flow control, FCV

       for Pressure control, PCV

       for Temperature control, TCV

       for Level control, LCV

Thus depending upon desired control, configuration and mathematical model is set into controller.

Hope this helps.

PYG,

Agreed with Art explanations...

Actually you need a flow control valve to provide a predetermined flow of fluid, say fuel gas, to your burner system.

But, basically and in general, all control valves, say FCV LCV TCV PCV, will adjust the fluid flow to control the flow itself (FCV) or the other process conditions such as level, pressure and temperature...
