We are working on a storage tank for an organic product whose boiling point is 230ºC at atmosphere.

The tank is designed at 7 barg. When we calculate the safety valve (fire case), some issues pop up.

Estimating the reliving condition shows us that 7 barg is close to its critical point.

Further researches show product will start decomposing to different components when temperature is higher than around 190ºC. 

How can we calculate the safety valve for the fire case?

Or how can we make the fire case not creditable?

You have a complicated one on your hands

 

Reactive and decomposing chemicals are a special subject that is handled by DIERS methods. API standards only refer to them.

 

You may need to do bench scale experiments to obtain data for the relief design if you don't have it.

 

A good starting point  is "Emergency Relief System Design Using DIERS Technology". It is a book from 1993, but the conceptual information is mostly valid.

Now, just out of curiosity: why are you using a 7 bar pressure vessel for storage of a liquid that boils at 230°C?

Thanks a lot for the information. 

 

It is an existing vessel used for ethanol. I don't know why is it 7 barg. The N2 blanketing system was 50mbarg for ethanol only.
