Can anyone recommend a method to calculate the valve closure time required to mitigate hammering effects in a liquid hydrocarbon pipeline?

You probably should seek the services of a professional who can perform the analysis for you.

There are software designed specifically for simulating hammer.

Examples are AFT Impulse, Bentley Hammer.

Calculating it by hand is tedious due to the iterations involved. That's why software are use to converge these calculations more easily.

The software allows you to simulate different valve closure times as well.
