Is sodium bicarbonate produced directly by carbonating sodium hydroxide on an industrial scale? It seems feasible if surplus NaOH produced during chlorine (in the chloralkali process) manufacture is accessible.

I've found that the Solvay process is the main technology and I'm wondering if there are currently any existing alternatives (like direct NaOH carbonation)?

Hi ,

Sodium bicarbonate is produced by carbonation (CO2)  of soda ash milk ( Na2CO3 +water) in an absorption tower  . it's true that chloro-caustic solution (NaOH +NaCl+water) could be used to produce Sodium  bicarbonate . This process is or was used by Solvay .

This means you need a source of CO2 .

My experience .

Good luck
