I am given that the volume of catalyst used is 4.87m3 and volume of reactor is 162.44m3. The area of catalyst is 2.9m2/g. Does it make sense that I use the surface area of reactor divide by the area of catalyst to get the mass of catalyst. Afterwards, use the mass of catalyst divide by the volume of catalyst to get the density of the catalyst??

Put your proposed equation into an engineering format with complete units of measure and conversion factors. I think you are trying to jump to an answer instead of working through the problem step by step. Somewhere you need to account for geometrical shape.

The surface area is irrelevant.

You need mass and volume.  Assuming you are looking for bulk density you need to know how much weight of catalyst was added to the volume of the reactor.

Hi,

Bulk density and catalyst density are related to each other  but you need the porosity of your bed .

Ro bulk = Ro Cat  *(1-phi)

phi =porosity

SSA = A/(V*Ro)

SSA : m2/kg Specific surface area  .

A:m2  area

V m3  volume

Ro :kg/m3 density

My 2 cents

Hi breizh,

Do you have any reference data on catalysts density for the formula?

Regards

Hi Nikolai ,

Sorry I don't have data to support but you can find video on Youtube explaining the relation between Bulk density and solid density of catalyst with application to PBR .

Hope this is going to help you.
