Hi 

 

I can't find any emergenncy shut down procedures that  would apply to distillation columns. Any general literature or advice on what these are? Specifically on the distillation columns in a deethanizer first Olefin plant. 

 

Other than use total reflux and a recycle line from the overhead of the columns that feeds the Compression stages, is there much else to do with the start up of this? 

 

Also based on what I have found there is not much on the start up procedures for the associated refrigeration cycle. Other than rate of cooling can be 50 deg C per hour and it would be turned on before the chilling train is initiated. Any advice?

If it is an emergency shutdown, like you said, then the setup is fairly straightforward:

• Isolate the system with emergency isolation valves
• Stop energy supply to the reboiler
• Depressurize inventory to the flare

"Emergency" means complete cease of operations and subsequent release of hydrocarbon inventory to a disposal system.

If emergency shutdown is due to fire case it's highly preferable to keep the inventory inside the column after depressurizing, at least, to postpone the column failure...
