Dear All;

I have been requested to design a crude carrier unloading station which receives crude from the carrier pump (4000 m³/hr). The rated head of the pump does not exceeds 5 barg which is not sufficient to deliver crude to crude terminal. the average capacity of the carrier is 1 million bbl. The pressure required to deliver crude to terminal is about 20 barg. My idea is to receive the carrier crude into a Tank (the capacity of the tank is about 5000 bbl) and after the tank level reaches 50% the transfer pump (connected to the tank) is started. the rated head of crude transfer pump is 23 barg. My question is :

Can i fill the tank and draw crude from it in the same time? 

If yes, what are the main issues to take into considerations?

Seems like you should ask a consultant for help. That's what a good engineer would do. It seems to me that you need some larger pipes.

Loading crude to carriers is a spensive operation if you have a delay in time, in particular for ships.  I think that 1 hr in stock crude time is low value for these operations, any process trouble will stop the loading process and the delay payment  will stress the plant manager.

 

Check the delay payment for loading carrier,, you will see my point.

Dear Horatorres
The tank is intended to allow a sufficient surge time to start the standby pump if the duty pump is tripped with out affecting oil unloading Process from the Carrier. This is the perliminary design idea for me.

Can i use a fixed roof tank (API 650) to receive and pump the liquid from it in the same time?

If you do pump in and out at the same time, you *may* lose one of your "checks and balances" on receipt of raw materials.  Namely, the strapping table for your tank.  You will not be able to say, according to the tank level increase we received X tons.  How do you verify raw materials receipts now?  I have seen no P&ID.  Weigh scale in and out?  Mass flow meter in?  How?

 

There is no law, Code, or regulation that prohibits one from pumping in and out of a tank at the same time.  It's your call.

No vent , no overflow , no dike . what about fire protection ?

 

If the problem is only about discharge pressure from the carrier, why don't you consider a booster pump ?  I don't see the interest of the tank .
