I have access to GPSA for the design of a three-phase separator.

It is no doubt a stupid thing to ask, but if I have a material and heat balance for entry into the three-phase separator, how do I calculate the material and heat balance around the separator (i.e. how much water and oil and gas out in their respective streams)?

Do you have access to a process simulator to flash the feed stream at the separator pressure into three phases? That will give you the theoretical flow rates for each phase. In reality, there will be some entrainment (non-theoretical mixing among phases) due to separator inefficiencies. If the separator is sized adequately, the theoretical flow rates can be assumed for design purposes. If you don't have access to a process simulator, try to borrow access from someone!

There are better methods for design.

You can use the sample at my website, once you have phase information.

Hi,

you may find pointers in the document attached .

A good reference : gas-liquid and liquid -liquid separators  by Maurice Stewart and Ken Arnold

Good luck

use HYSYS or any other process simulator to simulate the inlet stream and then the use three-phase sep which will give u gas, light liquid and heavy liq composition, flow, density etc. etc.
