Hello everyone,

I'm working on feasibility of installing stand by flaring system in refinery. Is there any standard available in this regard?

Any one who has worked in a process unit having multiple flares? I want to know design basis & requirements of standby flares apart from refinery downtime reduction for maintenance of flare/flare tips.

Any help in this regard will be highly appreciated.

Hi,

The flare system included various parts distributed in a vast area; hence having stand by just for flare tip among all mentioned parts could be logical...all other parts either are fixed equipment/piping/header which inherently don't need ant standby or have their own back up (such as LPG bottles as back up of fuel gas supply)...

Thanks for the reply Mr. Fallah,

In our refinery we have never faced issue of additional down time for flare tip maintenance. That's why the basis for my case seems inappropriate to have spare tip. I have read in documents that some refineries have spare flares (flare tips or even separate flare with stack and all) available, and I can't comprehend the reason for having a standby flare since it looks like an uneconomical option as continuous flaring will be required for pilot burners.

is there some specific gas composition involved which would cause more corrosion on flare tip and hence require frequent shutdowns? Any other reason?
