Hi i need to choose my bonnet type, whether it is closed or opened.

 

While choosing it, which factor i should consider?

 

Is this based on process fluid state like liquid or gas/steam service ?

 

Because, this seems confusing, as some suggets, 

 

For liquid application PSV , conventional type use closed bonnet,

For gas/vapour application, Bellows type use open bonnet.

 

So is this based on process fluid ? or where it gets vented ?

 

What if, the same conventional type psv gets vapor as process fluid or balanced bellows get liquid application ?

Also is this based on vessel it subjected with, say for eg ASME Section VIII or others ?

 

Kindly guide me as per API520 & your experience.

Note that 'open bonnet' is an term and means design as on the picture you may see in breizh's link. Do not confuse that with 'vented bonnet'.

Open bonnet is a kind of an old-fashioned design come out from steam industry and many users restrict its application as it has no advantages over the modern design and materials practiced.

b. Pressure relief valves shall have enclosed springs, except for air, cooling water, or steam services, in which open bonnet relief valves shall comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I

PG-67.5 ... For high-temperature water boilers pressure relief valves shall be used. Such valves shall have a closed bonnet.

7.1 Open Spring Type Valves
1. Open spring type valves shall be permitted only in:
a. Stearn service, such as boilers and waste heat boiler, if required by ASME Code, Section I.
b. Stearn service, such as turbine cases, located inside shelters or buildings.
2. Open spring type pressure valves located outdoors on an operating unit shall have a metal hood over safety valve spring to prevent water seepage into valve interior or accumulation of foreign material, such as catalyst dust.
3. Drawings of hood shall be submitted by manufacturer for approval, since spring covers shown in manufacturers' catalogs are not typically considered satisfactory.

Open Yokes (Optional for Section VIII Only)
Some section VIII safety relief valves are available in open yoke construction instead of the normal closed bonnet construction. This option is generally only used in steam applications or high temperature applications when it is desirable to keep the spring as cool as possible and the venting which will occur around the valve spindle is acceptable. Yukong’s practice is not to use an open yoke construction unless the manufacturer requires it due to service conditions. Generally all Section VIII steam valves are specified with the standard closed bonnet.

7.13.1 Conventional safety relief valves for closed relief systems shall have a closed bonnet.

2.3.2 Conventional spring-loaded pressure relief valves
... Spring-loaded PRVs connected to a closed discharge system shall always have a closed bonnet.
