I need to know a few things. I am doing my internship and have been given a problem with very limited information. I have to decide whether to use packing or plates. The tower is to be used for several different mixtures. So everytime it has to be washed completely, whenever a new seperation is to be done. So the internals of the tower have to be as such that they can be washed easily. And there is cost limit too. Cant afford a too expensive column too beacuse it is not a big thing. It is for a reboiler of 250 litres. Any suggestion???

Use a plate column because you have to wash out the column internally as well as for every mixture seperation. It will not be too costly. But take consideration of the presure drop and if you want to go in detail, then I prefer the mass transfer book TREYBEL.Regarding the reboiler consideration, you should have some appropriate data so that type of reboiler is to be used like for viscos fliuds foorced convection type sort of.OK, take care..........

Whether or not you can use plastic packing is going to depend on what type of plastic packing you use, what feed/products you have in the sytem, and the temperature involved.

You can use tray or packing depending on your process. Both should be fairly easy to clean. Ask your company how do they clean the reactor after use, before starting the next batch. You can always distil off some cleaning solution to clean your column.
