Hi all, I would like to ask the following questions regarding cooling towers:

1. What type of cooling tower(s) are used in an oil refinery?
2. How do you estimate the flowrates of water if the thermal duty is 50 MW?

Hi jacko,

I couldnt answer your 1st question but maybe i could for the 2nd.
Assume:
Heated water entering cooling tower is 50C
Cooled water leaving the system is 25C (or the temperature of the cooling air)

Q=mCp(50-25)
Cp = 4.2 kJ/kg.K ( this value should be correct, please re-check)
let Q = 50MW
and solve for m (kg/s)

Hope it helps

Dear Jacko,
If I am not wrong you are a new user of Cheresources. Anyways there is lots of information available regarding cooling tower in this website.Here is the link.....
http://www.cheresour...ctowerszz.shtml

Hope above link will solve your confusions regarding cooling tower.

And addition to the above there is another website which gives defination of the different terms i.e. water chemistry and the biological terms used in the cooling tower.
Here is the link,
