Just wondering what kind of cooling tower temperature drop to expect when cooling tower is operating with all the fans off and no evaporative cooling. If water at 450 gpm @ 95 deg F (from chiller condenser) enters cooling tower water distribution on the coldest winter day say -20 deg C dry bulb, what kind of temperature drop is expected. I'm designing a cooling tower by-pass line to divert some of the cooling water return (going back to the tower) to go directly into the chiller condenser when outisde temperature is very low.

I would contact the cooling tower vendor. You will need to know the model, fill type, etc.
Just get a few things straight: it is usually not a good idea to mix up your units of measurement. Either use gpm and deg. F or m3/h and deg. C.
Also, you need to know the wet bulb temperature when you rate a cooling tower. There will always be evaporative cooling when there is water flowing in contact with air, and that is what drives the performance of the tower.
Isn't there a problem with freezing up the tower when you reduce the water flow? Minus 20 deg. C sounds awfully low. cool.gif

Dear,

Here are some articles in the following journals related to your query,

http://www.sciencedi...0a4d14104aeb5e0

And a very useful article on Coolin water is availabe here in Cheresources and a DOS programm for

the cooling tower calculations,

http://www.cheresour...ctowerszz.shtml

As well the same query is discussed in the forums below

I hope that it will help you.
