Sheryl:

The design of saddle supports for horizontal vessels is detailed and illustrated fully in Eugene Megyesy's excellent and much recommended book, "Pressure Vessel Handbook", which is available through the internet in various spots.

I never tire of citing this book and recommending it to all Chemical Engineers who work in plant or production/process environments.

The formula is:

F = K11 Q

where,
Q = the load on one saddle, lbs
K11 = a constant, dependant on the contact angle.
