Does anybody know how to start designing a control system for a reactor? Is there any literature or reference to this matter? I'm designing a chemical reactor, and I need to design the control system. Thanks.

Joseph:

If you are going to do a reactor process design, then you must also incorporate a realistic, safe, and operable control system for it.

You – and any other student laboring under the need to understand and apply process control systems – need to know about one of the outstanding (if not the #1 expert) experts in process control: Mr. F. G. (Greg) Shinskey.

Greg’s book (he has written various) – “Process Control Systems”; 3rd Edition; McGraw-Hill Publishing Company; ISBN 0-07-056903-7 – has Chapter 10, “Controlling Chemical Reactions” dedicated to your subject. You should make every effort to get that book and study it carefully. You will need an authoritative reference for your design and I can assure you that when your instructor reads or hears Greg Shinskey’s name, he/she will recognize it as expert reference.

Your local technical library or book store certainly must have a copy. If not, then you can get one from Amazon Books in the Internet.

Thanks sir Art. I managed to get that book already. My reactor is a tubular reactor similar to shell and tube heat exchanger. I have problem deriving the dynamic model as the variables change with time and length of reactor at the same time. Any advise regarding this matter?
