Dear Friends,
hydrodesulphurization of crude oil is the topic of my final year project and i am the student of final year(chemical engineering).plz help me by giving ur views.

According to my knowledge and experience, there is no such process as crude oil HDS. Desulfurization technology is developed, established, and proven for various crude oil cuts such are: naphtha, kerosene, diesel, atmospheric and vacuum gas oils. But I have never heard of a process for full-range crude oil desulfurization. Are you sure that you got the right understanding of the subject from your professor?

It is somewat interesting to tell that
I have come across a Hydro skimming Crude Oil Refinery Plant at Karachi PK that had Hydrodesulfurization of Crude Oil prior to Feeding into Crude Distillation Tower (If recalled correctly)

Since this was not the one I worked with the details are difficult to be dug-out.

Qalander, that is very interesting information. Can you share some more details about it?
I have moved from refining business some 14 months ago, but it is not known to me that any industrial-scale process has been applied so far.

First of all I must apologize that I could not correctly recall and narrate about hydrodesulphurization of crude.
The true position is somewat different (and Zauberberg you were correct)Actually it is a scheme of
1)Crude distillation column producing Three main streams
i.e Bottoms(residue),Side stream gasoil,Top Pump Around (partly steam stripped as kero) and Lighter Naphtha and gases from overhead
2)Out of these Kerosene and Lighter(they call kero minus) are hydrodesulphurized
3)Gasoil goes after steam stripping as diesel.
4)Residue as Fuel oil
5)Gas as Refinery F/Gas& LPG
Hope This Rectifies my erratic reference

Thanks for your update. At the time when I left refinery technical service, the most advanced (and commercially proven) refining processes were RFCC and, up to some extent, Residue Hydrocracker which is an integrated combination of LC-finer and conventional hydrocracker. Desulfurizing the full range crude oil - simply looking at first glance - does not appear to be economically attractive option, even if it is technically feasible. Just try to imagine what kind of HDS reactor and hydrogen quenching you would need to have for such units. And the catalyst life cycle would be extremely short due to poisoning by heavy metals from the Residue.

Dear Zauberberg,
Another aspect just recalled for the crude feed; it had relatively higher sulfur and nitrogen contents.

If your mean about hydrodesulphurization is elimination of mercaptans by water ,i will refer you to a chemical reaction as below:

R-S-H (water insoluble) + H2O + oxidizing agent =====> R-So3H(water soluble)

may help you.
