Hi every body
when do we use a simple pontoon or a double deck in an external floating roof storage tank ? (advantages and disadvantages)
Note the tank is used as an oil storage tank

Abdel,
Following is an excerpt from an article published in 'Chemical Engineering' magazine titled 'Understanding Atmospheric StorageTanks' which describes the characteristics of a pontoon or a double deck in an external floating roof storage tank:
"Pontoon-type roof has the following characteristics:
- Increased buoyancy and stability
- Pontoons occupy about 20 – 40% of roof area
The double-deck roof comprises upper and lower decks separated by bulkheads and trusses.
These roofs have the following characteristics:
- The space between the decks is separated into liquid-tight compartments
- Superior loading capacity
- Recommended for tank diameters below 12 m and above 60 m"
Sketches are provided in the article depicting the pan-type, pontoon and double-deck arrangement for external floating roof tanks.
In my humble opinion, the double-deck arrangement would be a more robust design but may cost extra and a detailed techno-economic evaluation would be needed to arrive at the optimum option.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ankur

Dear ankur Hello,
I admire this wonderful prompt info.
Just a little query'Why the double decks not recommended/useful for the diameters 12m& 60m;or this is typo error?
Best Regards

Dear Qalander,
No this is not a typo error. It is quoted verbatim fom the said article. I am not an expert in tank design and I have only passed on information printed in a reputed magazine like 'Chemical Engineering' and also for the simple reason that I enjoyed reading this article.
Regards,
Ankur.

Thanks indeed Dear ankur;
If possible could you send link 'short cut' or give precise reference to dig out from 'Chemical Engineering' archives if available via on-line access Please.
Merely to obtain insight about the reasons; if any barring Diameters in between12m& 60m.
And my knowledge/ understanding update
Best regards
Qalander

hi ankur,
i will recommend you to see respective codes of asme/api and/or others codes/stds.
search also for vendors/manufacturers of those tanks and comunnicate with them after
having your data sheet available for your specific requirements

Hi Kimmo,
Are you confused? Nowhere have I mentioned about any data sheets. The person who started the thread, wanted to know the difference between a simple pontoon and a double-deck arrangement for a external floating roof tankand I have just provided some information based on a magazine article.
You shouldn't be posting responses before reading the thread completely. It is very annoying and distracting.
All members are requested to be thoughtful in giving their responses because chemical engineering is serious business. Please desist from making frivolous responses.
Regards,
Ankur.
