Is there a cost effective method of reducing sulphur ppm in diesel fuel from approx 1000ppm to <10ppm on a small scale?

any info would be much appreciated!

The only proven method is catalytic desulfurization in Co-Mo/Ni-Mo beds, at high H2 partial pressures ranging from 30bar above and LHSV<4.

I'd suggest you to explore the Criterion Catalysts website for plenty of additional information:
Criterion Technical Papers

There are some efforts to employ bio-desulfurization in reducing the sulfur content of petroleum cuts, but HDS process still remains as the base approach in modern industry.

From what I know the proven commercial diesel desulfurization technologies are usually licensed. And together with the technology comes also the catalyst; the catalyst don't necessary come without the technology. But there may be some cases with a different situation.

The technologies that come first into my mind are:
1. Exxon, actually ExxonMobil Research and Technology, see:
http://www.exxonmobi...gies/index.html
Look for ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel);
2. UOP Distillate Unionfining:
http://www.uop.com/o...unionfining.pdf

There are other ULSD technology providers: Haldor Topsoe, Shell, based on Criterion catalysts (I bet that you need Shell's approval to buy Criterion catalysts).
There may be other out there, there may be hundreds that are waiting to be proven. Just google the words "ULSD Technology"; my search returned over 57,000 results.

Good Luck

Hi,

you did not indicate your objective to remove the sulphur from diesel and what quantity you need to process ?

there are commercial process to remove sulphur from diesel the posts have covered this. there are patents to how to do this with unconventional ways, e.g. by bio-technology, ultrasonic waves, slurry phase ... and there are chemical lab scale technologies to remove specific type of shlphurs.

for commercial process its all in the catalyst used and process pressure which ultimately favors one technology over others.

cheers,

sm
