Hi Friends
am Working in EPC Company.Currently We are doing Crude oil Tank Farm Projects. in this Project am doing Detail Engineering.my dought is The PMC is mentioned Data sheet ,the necessity of vortex breaker is determined by detailed engineering contractor.how can i find the vortex breaker is required or not.

kannan,
A liquid exit from a nozzle and the liquid height (between liquid surface and nozzle/hole) is below a minimum submergence height (S), free surface vortex potentially form and vapor entrainment into liquid outlet is possible. Vortex break is required. You need to determine the minimum submergence height. There are many article discussing this topic. Check out "Minimum submergence to avoid vapor entrainment"

Another golden rule of thumb is: whenever you are feeding a pump from particular vessel, vortex breaker is considered more than desirable - not to say mandatory.

Zauberberg,
May I dare to disagree with your statement. The necessity of vortex breaker depends on the type and the capacity of the pump being utilized and also on the suction line, whether it feeds the pump from the bottom or from the side of the tank.
Most of the small capacity pumps and the pumps getting suction from the side of the tank, vortex may not be an issue hence there is no requirement of the vortex breakers.
Best Regards,
ARAZA

You are absolutely right, Araza. I have never seen vortex breakers on side-nozzles; swirling is not possible to happen on lateral suction connections.
My comment was related to the most common arrangement, when pump is located beneath the suction vessel.

Edited since I didn't read the previous posts and my post is only a duplication of what they said.
