I am supposed to develop a process for the purification of brine for electrolysis. The impurities are Calcium, Magnesium and Sulphate. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas of any books or other references I may use. Any thoughts on the process would also be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Clayton,

The way to purify Brine is to use Soda ash and Milk of lime to precipitate Ca2+ and Mg2+ , creating CaCo3 and Mg(oH)2 which will precipitate . NaCo3 and Ca(oh) 2 will have to be in excess . After precipitation in several reactors in serie the solution with settle in decanters . You will have to use floculant to ease the decantation .
Probably you will find more info on internet : Google .

Clayton,

additional input ,
CaCl2 + Na2CO3 -----> CaCo3 +2 NaCl

Na2CO3+Ca(OH)2 -----> CaCo3 + 2 NaOH

MgCl2 + 2NaOH ----> Mg(OH)2 +2 NaCL

Regards

Breizh
