What are the environmental considerations taken in cooling tower desing and operations?

Two of the environmental cosiderations in the design and operation of an evaporative cooling water system are:

(1) Maintain a blowdown rate that is as low as possible (which means operating at concentration cycles as high as possible).

(2) Install drift eliminators to minimize the drift loss of water to the atmosphere.

The purpose of the two items above is to minimize the use of fresh water as well as, in some cases. to reduce the corrosion on nearby parked cars, etc. caused by the deposition of cooling tower drift losses.
