Please can anyone help me how to obtain the number of trays and reflux ratio using the McCabe-Thiele Method for this example:

A 100 kmol/hr stream of ethanol (50 mol%) and n-propanol (50 mol%) is fed to a continuous distillation column at room temperature (298 K) and atmospheric pressure.

Please I need step by step description. THANKS FOR UNDERSTANDING.

I assume you have some level of Chemical Engineering education.

You will need following data to solve the problem:

Feed concentrations (Xf) ......... you have it already.

Distillate purity(Xd)
Bottoms purity(Xb)
Equilibrium data for Ethanol/n-Propanol binary system.
Your feed stream vapor fraction (f).

Your number of trays will depend on your Reflux ratio, so you have to optimize the situation.

Once you have all this, check out "Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering" by McCabe-Smith, chapter on Distillation. You will find some examples (solved) in the book.

Best luck.

Hi Tolli,

To support your query you can use this link :http://www.chemsof.com/

Hope it helps.
Any way, you need to find a text book to support your study (MacCabe & Thiele).

Perry could be an option, in case you cannot get access to the reference given by CMP74

Hello cmp74,

Please I need step by step description because I'm still utterly confused. Look I know that you are busy and maybe You have no enough time to solve my problems but please this is very important for me because as I said I'm utterly confused and don't know how to overcome these problems.

Thank you for understanding. Your help would be very useful and necessary on helping me out how to tackle the problems of this nature.

Hello cmp74,

Please I need step by step description because I'm still utterly confused.

I would like to point you to a very good write-up from Milton Beychok on http://en.citizendiu...e-Thiele_method
If you have any specific problem with one of the steps, please post.
