Hello,

I am new to this forum, can anyone please guide me on:
1) how to determine the number of stages and the feed tray location in Hysys to simulate a distillation column?
2) can any of the available column options be used to simulate the columns e.g. if i want to simulate a Condensate Stabilisation column, can i use a simple distillation column? in that case can I enter a pseudo bottom stage inlet stream as I dont have one in the actual column but it needs to be entered in Hysys.

Thanx

1. A quick estimate of these parameters can be done by using Fenske-Underwood-Gilliland correlations. These are also embedded in HYSYS.

2. No reason to do that. There is a "Reboiled Absorber" template in HYSYS unit operations, it fits perfectly for stabilizer towers.

Hi Zauberberg, many thanks for the reply but isnt it that you have to select the no. of stages and the location of each stream to go from first step to the next to define the column, how can i find the option to use the Fenske-Underwood-Gilliland correlations?? Actually i have side draw to remove water as well and i dont know which stage to take it from and which stage to put the Feed stream on, and how to define a spec for the column.
thanks for help.

Fenske-Underwood correlations you can find in every mass transfer textbook. I am attaching two pages from GPSA where you can see how it is done. I leave it to you to find Gilliland correlation and define the optimum feed stage.

The optimum water draw you can find by watching H2O concentrations in liquid phase across the tower, for the final tower configuration you select. Provide a collector (chimney) tray for such purpose.

Best regards,
