Hi All,

We just had an incident on site where we lost integrity of our refrigerated butane transfer line (as it leaked into the Tank bund area). It had operating conditions of around 5 bar and 17 deg C.

I have done simple calcs on volume lost. The only thing that I am lacking is the situation where the Ops isolated the system and let it bled to atm pressure. I am interested in calculating the volume of the liquid that we would have lost as a result of depressurising.

So,
Is there a way we can calculate the volume of the liquid lost as a result of depressurisation.
PS. Have looked into API-Vapour Depressurising Calcs & Thermal Expansion Formulae of help me start from somewhere, but it doesn’t seem to help me there.

Yes, a mass and energy balance on the system. Initial conditions are pressurized and all liquid. Final conditions are depressurized and liquid and vapor at a lower temperature.
