Question: | Is the NTU method a reliable means of measuring heat exchanger performance? |
Keywords: | heat,exchanger,effectiveness,ntu,performance,monitoring |
Answer: | After cleaning, the U-value should be higher and the Number of Transfer Units (NTU) is equal to UA/Cmin where Cmin is the heat capacity of the fluid with the lower heat capacity. The effectiveness could then be determined any number of ways, but you can see one at:http://www.cheresources.com/hteffzz.shtmlI think that heat exchanger effectiveness is not really much more useful than monitoring the decline of the overall heat transfer coefficient with respect to time. Such a graph would show a relatively quick decline in U-value followed by a "leveling off". The U-value at the "level" point could be considered your service U-value. |
