Hi all,

I am a part of BOCI. We are working on a project at our plant which requires us to cool 108m3/hr of water from 11 deg Celsius to 8 deg celsius. That is; the TR is 110.

As I am preparing a techno-commercial proposal of this project, could you help in giving a rough cost estimation for installing this (operating cost and installation cost)

As we are a cryogenic industry, I was also thinking on the lines of the possibility of using the cryogenic liquid (liquid Nitrogen) to cool the large quantity of water (108 m3/hr) by 3 deg celsius.

Are such systems available anywhere. I think a metal which is able to withstand the cryogenic temperature can help in heat exchange between the two media (water and cryo liquid).

Could you post in your views on this

The idea of utilizing liquid Nitrogen for cooling water is not new if you are willing to gasify a small quantity of liquid nitrogen. There was a post in "Cheresources" a long time ago which had discussed the possibilities of cooling water, using liquid nitrogen. You may use the search feature of the forum to look for that old post.

For such temperature range and absolute values, you could consider Lithium Bromide (LiBr) absorption chiller, as it has been widely used for chilling water down to +6 degC. For cooling water from 11 to 8 degC there is no real need to employ cryogenic service - unless it is already there and available for extra duty. In addition, cryogenic temperatures call for expensive materials/stainless steels, which adds an extra cost that cannot be justified.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, we do have some extra liquid nitrogen, and the quantity of water to be cooled is quite large, 108 m3/hr , that is why i was studying its feasibility.

Could you also help in arriving at a cost estimation for installing a chiller unit, 110 TR.
