Dear all

in design for a small drum (vol.=30 m3) i consider a vertical flame arrester.
How to size it? i think by using API2000 and same a emergency vent valve can calculate the size of it.
is it correct method?
tanks for your guidance

somayeh,

Usually the size of flame arrester is specified by purchaser, because it would be either end of line or inline type. By default, the size of the flame arrester would be same as that of the line and if it is needed to change in order to meet the process requrement, would be announced by vendor.
You should specify the flame arrester via relevant data sheet included service conditions (such as normal inlet pressure, inlet pressure at maximum flowrate, operating temperature, physical property and chemical composition of the passing fluid,...) and material (of the flange, reducer, internal element,...) of its construction. Vendor would proposed the flame arrester such that meet your requirement.

You should contact Company like Protectoseal , they have all the support you need for this technology .

Attached an other reference

somayehn,

An in-line or end-of-the-line flame arrester is provided in the normal vent connection of the low pressure or atmospheric storage tank according to API 2000. The most important data that flame arrester manufacturer / vendor needs is the maximum normal venting rate (greater of the total inbreathing or outbreathing rates) from the tank or vessel.

The basic function of a flame arrester is to prevent propagation of a flame in or out of the tank by bringing the velocity of the flame propagation below the threshold velocity. Flame arrester is not meant to handle the addtional emergency venting load due to an external fire scenario.

So you need to calculate the normal venting rates for specifying or preparing a flame arrester datasheet.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Ankur.

thanks for your replies,ok, I need a minimum of information for vendor and maximum normal venting rate is most important. How can calculate it?
Thanks

somayehn,

The method and equations to calculate the normal venting rate are provided in API STD 2000, 6th Edition, 2009. You need to look at the following earlier post regarding tank normal venting requirements:

Ankur.
