Dear all,
We have existing GRP vessel with stainless steel [either 304 or 316 - not sure which one] agitator in it. We are planning to charge about 37% by w/w Hydrochloric Acid and mix it with metal oxides. As this is the pilot plant trial we want to use the existing equipment and control the cost i.e. we don’t want to spend money in coating the agitator with PTFE or Polypropylene[PP]. I understand that the reaction of HCl with metal will produce Hydrogen and metal chloride and not sure if we consider agitator as the consumable item. We intend to run this plant for about 6months [24hrs] and not sure if we can use agitator as a consumable item.
Please note that we hall all other equipment/pipework are made up of PP except agitator. Could anybody let me know if I can use agitator without coating?
Thanks
KS

I would think it would; from what I've found in my (very brief) search, 37% HCl will eat pretty much everything other than tantalum and zirconium. (http://www.tantaline...osion_Chart.JPG)

Google corrosion charts for HCl. I know there's a multitude of information for sulfuric (which my plant uses), and would imagine that hydrochloric has similar info available online.

From my experience with stainless steels and HCl, your agitator probably wouldn't last six months...

Consider this resource to support your query . SS and HCL won't last!
Consider CS +coating .
