Daer all,
I am working on Design of a Slug Catcher, an equipment (3 phase separator) required in Oil & Gas Industry at the upstream (near Gas Wellhead) to separate gas/oil/water.
I have got a basic understanding of its design. But it will be very kind of you, if you can help me with followings
1. How to design a Slug Catcher (i mean what are the issues that need to be taken care of )?
2. Any previous design/operating data/ datasheet available with you.

Thanks & Regards
GreatParesh

Paresh

From your posting, it appears you are catring to a single well(?). The very basic steps are:
1. Establish the slug size
2. Establish the slug frequency
3. Allow sufficient volume in teh separator (typically between normal level and high level setpoints) to accomodate this slug, at the same time ensuring that the slug volume can be disposed of before the next slug arrives.

You could also consider a slug contrl valve on teh separator inlet, which closes with increasing liquid level in the separator.

Better and more detailed means of minimising pipeline slugging, and simulating the same utilise dynamic simulators like OLGA.

Regards

Please is there any book that gives full information on slug catcher sizing. I am so much interested to know it too. I will appreciate the details of a 2-phase slug catcher.

Regards.

I am attaching my own spreadsheet for sizing of inlet seperator / Slug catcher.
Hopefully it would help.

didnt have much time else i would have removed its cometics defect.
tell me if it works

cheers guys

greatparesh,

my experience is relevant to slug catchers along pipelines.

In this case, a couple of approach are advisable to estimate the volume of a single slug.

The first is based on the document SPE 15103 (Society of Petroleum Engineers 1986, that unfortunately I don't have) where correlations are presented by two authors: Scott and Norris.
Both express the length of expected slug (Ls, in feet) as:

ln(Ls) = A + B * [ln(Di)]c where Di is the internal diameter of the pipeline (inches)

According to Scott: A=-25.4144; B= 28.4948; c= 0.1
according to Norris: A= -2.099; B= 4.859; c=0.5

Plotting the 2 correlations vs the pipeline dia one can note that the results are almost identical.

The second is based on a Rule of Thumb of Duckler (sorry, no refs...). He indicated the min ans max slugs' length as Ls(min) = 12*Di and Ls(max) = 30*Di (Ls in feet and Di inches).

Duckler correlation gives by far smaller slugs volumes and is what I found to be of practical use in my projects.

Probably SPE correlations are more related to wellhead applications so could be more helpful for your case. However, unfortunately I don't have this specific doc.

Hope this could help you out.

The steady-state software from Neotec (PIPEFLO) has feature for estimating the slug size, etc.

You would only need to go to undetake (expensive) dynamic calculations in OLGA if slugs were predicted in PIPEFLO.

ROTATOR

I calculate finger type slug catcher with SHELL Design Engineering Practice as refference. Probably you can find the documents. I can't attached here due to the file is huge. However, I will send you the spreadsheet

Assuming the spreadsheet(s) are not proprietary, it would be MUCH more efficient to post them one time on this website rather than responding to many requests for private emails to individuals. Furthermore, that approach also allows all of the site readers to readily access any useful resources, which is an important function of the website.

Hello

Maybe this is not the case, if your slug catcher is very near the wellhead, but another thing to take into consideration when sizing is pigging. If you are going to pig the lines which go into the slug catcher, then it has to be sized for the slug volume which will arrive as a consequence of this pigging (and that will be a higher volume than the one that normally arrives).

Secondly, I didn't see any spreadsheet attached, so, following djack advice, dear uetian, could you please attach it here??

Thanks
