We are designing a recovery facility for sludge oil from the conditioning process employed by ships, power plants using #6 HFO engines.  It involves decanting, flash evaporation and long settling times in cone bottom tanks to settle heavy fractions and solids.

When settling, is it more effective to heat up the oil during loading of tanks and allow to cool and settle, or use a heating coil to maintain optimal viscosity during settling?  Tanks are heavily insulated and settling times are up to 21 days.

The main objective is to reduce the ash content of the product to below 0.1%/vol. from 1.6% so it may be effectively blended with #6 HFO or used as a direct substitute.

Any insight would be most appreciated.
