Can someone help explain how I can determine the location of the feed tray in a distillation column?

Thank u in advance.

Hey!

For a column, if the feed is a saturated liquid, then the feed must be fed at the point of intersection of the operating lines. hence, you can get the feed tray from the McCabe Thiele.

P>S: taking into consideration the number of question su have asked on Distillation, i recommend you read Ksiter's Distillation Design and Treybal. Any mass transfer book will solve your queries in detail.

Hi
Accordin to me u can always locate the feed tray location on the intersection of the operating lines either using Mccabe Thiele or Ponchon Savarit method (irrespective of the saturation\unsaturation condition given about the feed). For further ref, check the attachment.

Hi

Try to finf about Fenske-Underwood method which uses an algebrical way to find
the fedd tray location.

Hi ss3,

I agree with Hamadi about using the Fenske-Underwood method to do it. It would be much simpler.

However still, Fenske-Underwood would not be enough for you to determine the location of feed tray. Additionally you still need to use the Gilliland and subsequently the Kirkbride method to determine the feed tray location.

Just briefly,
1. Fenske method estimates the minimum number of stages (at total reflux).
2. Underwood method estimates minimum reflux ratio.
3. Gilliland method estimates the number of theoretical stages required.
4. Kirkbride method estimates an optimal feed tray location (numbered from top of the column).
