Dear All,

If I propose to change the pump mechanical seal of an existing pump from a single mechanical seal to a dual mechanical seal, will there be any changes in the operating parameters of the existing fixed speed motor of the pump? If yes, what would be those changes, and whether any changes / modifications to the motor are required to be done? Would like to know practical first-hand experience on this, from operations / maintenance engineers.

Regards,

Ankur.

its been a while since I was in the plant, but as far as I can recall, I cant think of any parameters that affect the process side. There will be the physical side obviously: space/ seal fluids, startup procedure etc.

Is the pump being re-used for another service?

Hi,

No the service remains the same. Dual seal application is considering zero or miniscule emissions. Of course, zero leakage is a practical impossibility but the idea is to ensure that hydrocarbon leak is almost undetectable during normal continuous pump operation over a long duration.

My own understanding is that there will be no impact on the fixed speed motor of the pump. However, just wanted to make sure that my understanding is correct.

Regards,

Ankur.

Ankur,

In our plant we change 4 pumps of API Plan 21 seal to API Plan Plan53, and we donĀ“t have problems in the electrical motors.

Ankur,

I attached a reference from Calculation&Shortcut Deskbook by Chemical Engineering Magazine, USA.
