Hello,

I know there are already few threads where topic of flare purge gas requirements were discussed in the past. Also various methods (e,g, HUSA, TAN, API 521 etc), recommendations were discussed to determine purge gas requirements.

However, i could not find clear answer to my following query:

Whether the flare header sweeping/purge gas requirement is different for different types of flare?

The methods presented in the discussions and API 521 are generally related to vertical flares (please correct me if got this wrong!).

However, my thinking is that enclosed (ground) flare or staged vertical flares might have different (or much reduced) purge gas velocity requirements. This is because, being a staged configuration, it will offer more back-pressure in the flare network or the flare header will be already at slightly greater positive pressure. This might be considered similar to a flare fitted with a purge reduction seal or a device.

Also being a staged flare, the flare tip purge requirement should be lower as continuous purging will be needed only in a part section of the flare tip.

Can anyone share their own experiences with regards to the ground flares and related purging requirements?

Regards,
