Hi all,
I have question on dependency of Vortex formation and draining of tanks.
Does formation of Vortex helps in draining?
Please leave a reply.
Thanks & regards,

Hi Raj,
The vortex formation will retard the draining process hence it should be removed by using vortex breaker...

Hi Fallah,
I was searching in internet for answers,I found the below this below link -
https://physics.stac...-speed-drainage
it says, vortex helps in draining, I got confused.
Thanks & Regards,

Hi Raj ,
Consider the link above to support your query.
In the real life whenever a vortex is developping it's a good practice to install a vortex breaker i.e before the suction of the pump to get it flooded.
Hope this is helping you .

Hi Raj,
In general for liquid draining by gravity it can be right, but in suction drum of a pump vortex forming can lead to pulling the air inside the pump hence the vortex should be broken using vortex breaker...

Thank you Breizh and Fallah for your responses. I understand that the when liquid draining by gravity it helps draining and also if the suction pipe connects with the pump, we should install vortex breaker to prevent vortex from going into my pump.
I want to know is there any calculation method available to calculate the liquid flow rate when the tank is having a vortex and I am draing through a 2" drain pipe.

Raj:
You have not read fallah's correct statement carefully. He has stated: "vortex forming can lead to pulling the air inside the pump". In other words, mixed flow of liquid and air will be induced into the eye of the pump's impeller and cause what is conventionally called "cavitation". This will cause a pump's failure to pump the liquid fluid.
In order to avoid the formation of a vortex affecting the suction of a pump, fallah correctly prescribes a vortex breaker. Many text books and articles in the Internet describe the design and installation of a proper vortex breaker. There is no need "to calculate the liquid flow rate when the tank is having a vortex". Simply install a vortex breaker and avoid the problem.

Hi Art Montemayor,
This tank is not connected with a pump, so there is no a cavitation issue. This tank makes a premix and dumps into the big tank, in between we have no pump.
As mentioned by Fallah, in liquid draining by gravity vortex helps to drain the tank faster. I want to know is there any way to calculate the flow rate coming out from the tank when we know tank has vortex inside. It will help me to understand in how much tank will be empty.

Is this system already in service?
