How do you convert ppmv to ppmmol and vice versa. Or are they the same? If so why?

Thanks,

I have never actually seen those units used anywhere (and would in fact try to avoid any "parts-per" units), but if you are talking about an ideal gas: At the same temperature and pressure, every mole of every gas has exactly the same volume, so ppmv and ppmmol should be the same

It is quite simple. PPM or Parts Per Million is one part of a particular component in million parts of the total mixture.

1) ppmw = parts per million by weight = 1 milligrams per kg

2) ppmv = parts per million by volume = 1 milliliter per m3

3) ppmmoles = parts per million by moles = 1 milli-mole per kg-mole

you know the composition, mass of the mixture and temperature-pressure, you can inter convert  into any of the units

For water i.e. when density is 1000 kg/m3....1ppm = 1 mg/liter

For ideal gas ppmv = ppm mole as vol% = mol%

Revert in case of any query

i use the following formula  for gases:

ppm w/w =(ppm v/v of component X in gas mixture Y) * (Mol. weight of component X)/ (Mol. weight of gas Y)

w: stands for weight ; v:stands for volume

For example X can be H2S compound and Y a methane gas mixture containing that H2S compound.
