Is there a quick way to size the vent size for a tank that gets filled with solids?

Hi ,

Not clear to me what you are looking for ! I've seen goose neck with sock attached , is it what you expect ?

How the tank is fed ?  conveyor or pneumatic transport ?

You should consult suppliers of dedusting system .

What is important to know is the material you store in silo, the particles size of the dust  and its ability to react with moisture which will impact the shelf life of socks on dedusting system . 

 

On a safety view point consider the risk of dust explosion.

Hi,

 

1-Estimate the maximum rate of solid filling in m3/hr...

2-Estimate the vent size based on estimated rate in the first step and mach number equal to 1

3-Get the minimum size of the vent equal to one size larger than the size estimated in the second step

4- Check the tank backpressure is less than (or equal to) tank design pressure.

What exhaust velocity shall I use?

And how can you calculate the back pressure at the exhaust?

The exhaust velocity that results at the maximum rate of solid filling in m3/hr (#1).

 

You really haven't told us any details.  What does the installation look like?  So my reply can be more specific than - you know just outside the exhaust you have atmospheric pressure.  Then work backwards.
