Dear All,

I am going to size a steam coil for a tank. The material inside the tank is used cooking oil (UCO). How can I find the overall heat transfer coefficient to apply it for sizing the steam coil and finally determine the coil area?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Regards

Freeman

Kern's Process Heat Transfer and Perry's ChE's Handbook has some overall heat transfer coefficients (U) listed for some operations.  They also contain methods to calculate a U for your situation.

In this case the overall heat transfer coefficient U is almost entirely determined by the transfer coefficient on the oil side (coil outside), which is by natural convection and that depends very much on the viscosity of the UCO.

Every decent textbook on heat transfer has a chapter about natural convection.
