Dear All.

I have to design the spreaders ( sort of spargers) for curde oil distribution in storage tank (which is being used for the purpose of Oil/Water separation). This spreaders are basically used for the purpose of uniform distribution of crude across the tank area (Tank diameter - 120'). Also, the collector spreaders are used for draw-off of seperated Oil from top level and water from bottom level. Collecotrs are also similar to spreader but flow of fluid is in opposite direction.

But in existing tanks, we are finding a lot of back pressure!!! We are unable to quantify the back pressure and also what would be the optimum hole size and quantity to be provided for given flow and given fluid properties.

I request all my friends in this forum to help to find the proper technical information on which I can develop the design module for sizing pipe size, hole size and no. of holes to avoid back pressure.

Looking forward to valuable suggestions from you guys.

Thanks,

Hi Shivku

About your question, you can review at Perry's Chemical Engineers' Handbook by Perry and Greene.

Chapter 6: FLUID AND PARTICLE DYNAMICS page 6-32 till 6-34 subjet: FLUID DISTRIBUTION this subject has an example.

I think this article solve your problem. But for purposes of collectors, I think they are ok. If you prevent plugging of holes.

Good luck

A couple of more resources for you if you can track them down:

1. "Simplified Sparger Design", Kent S. Knaebel, Chemical Engineering Magazine, March 9, 1981 (Plant Notebook)

2. "Hole-area distribution for liquid spargers-A correction", W. H. Mink, Chemical Engineering Magazine, April 6, 1981

The last article gives a program for the TI (Texas Instrument) Calculator #59. A companion article in Fluid Flow magazine presents a version in BASIC. I don't have the exact date for this article but is looks like sometime around 1984 or 85.

Thank you very much guys. In fact I already referred to Chapter-6 of Perry's Chemical Handbook. The details provided in that book for sparger portion are not adequate. However. information provided regarding other magzines is very useful and thank u very much for that.

If u get any material in this reagard, please assist me in providing the same.

Thanks again.

As far as I can tell, the article has not been uploaded to this website for anyone to retrieve so I don't see any copyright infringement here; at least from our (CheResources) management side. However, if @Profe chooses to send copyrighted material to others, it is he who has to live with the fact that he may be breaking some law, or not.
