Hi All, We are commissioning a new amine gas sweetening plant and want to offload amine (* DOW Ucarsol AP-804) in the amine storage tank from iso- containers. Amine will be sitting in the storage tank( carbon steel) under a nitrogen blanket for about a month. Question is " do we need to dilute the amine with demin water or it can be stored in the concentrated form? "

Hi,

You may want to ring the vendor, reference in the document.

note: It probably takes more than 1 month for the shipment to reach your place. To me the key is the construction material of the storage tank. You should have shelf life written on the COA and/or Contract.

Good luck

Thanks for the response, the shelf life quoted by DOW is 18 months which runs out in a weeks time . However we are a bit away from start up(another 02 months). Don't want to contact the vendor as they may want to sell us a whole new batch( 3.5 MM USD). SO my question is

Do you have access to design documentation for this storage facility? Or tank databook?

I agree with shvet1 and breizh that to check about the tank design and material.

Not sure if your storage is originally designed for MDEA which is denser than water, you may need to check on that one.

You may involve your material engineer for discussion on material point of view. Amine vendor should be involved for this discussion too.

One thing worth mentioning to them is that you just need to use it for commissioning. So you may need to evaluate how long MDEA will sit in the tank until you can do into the diluted form.

Another thing to consider is how you will handle MDEA after this, I assume that you want to keep the tank full with concentrated MDEA.

Probably inject it into Amine unit for commisioning?

So the next question is can your facility handle it all? In this case is to consider if your transfer pump is designed for concentrated MDEA or not.

You may need to evaluate all related equipments that involve in operation.

Hi,

If corrosion is the main concern, it's not by Amine itself but results from Amine degradation products and Heat Stable Amine Salts and other contaminants.

Corrosion is also dependent on the type of Amine used. In general, the corrosion rate is in order of aggressiveness from most to least as follows:

MEA-DGA-DIPA-DEA and MDEA

To add, you need to look into how the tankage system is designed.

It's not uncommon to see two separate tanks, one for concentrated MDEA and one for diluted MDEA, with provision for dilution.

So it's more of a question on what exactly you want to do with the MDEA after loading to the storage tanks.

And MDEA transfer pumps have to be designed properly. Pure MDEA is more viscous than diluted MDEA.
