Hello professionals

i am a project engineer (mechanical) working in an API industry and i have assigned to design a centrifugal pump for utility water circulation to the batch reactor for our pilot plant. The problem is we have no process engineers in our site because it is a greenfield project and i have no idea of what kind of a product we are going to produce because it is constructing based on the current API needs in the market so i have no clue to where to start this at first. i will give you our equipment details with related ancillary equipment, so please anyone help me to calculate the steps involved in flow rate calculation for utilities for the batch reactor.

1.) Overall reactors :
Reactor MS/SS316                    : 1.0 KL  - 1 No's (Jacket volume 200 Liters)
Reactor GLR                              : 1.0 KL -  1 No's (Jacket volume 200 Liters)
Reactor MS/GLR/GMP              :  630 L  -  1 No's (Jacket volume 160 Liters)
Reactor MS/GLR/GMP              :  630 L  -  1 No's (Jacket volume 160 Liters)
Reactor SS304/SS316/GMP     :  600 L  -  1 No's (Jacket volume unknown)
Reactor MS/GLR/GMP              :  250 L  -  1 No's (Jacket volume unknown)

2.) Ancillary equipment (Condensers):

 8 M2 SS316 Primary condenser (Box type condenser) - 2 No's For 1.0 KL SS reactors - Cooling tower water in/out

 4 M2 SS316 Secondary condenser (Box type condenser) - 2 No's For 1.0 KL SS reactors - Brine in/out (-10 Deg.C)

8 M2 Graphite block type condenser - 1 For 600 L GLR reactor (Cooling tower water)

6 M2 Graphite block type condenser - 2 For 630 L GLR reactor (Cooling tower water)

6 M2 Graphite block type condenser - 1 For 250 L GLR reactor (Cooling tower water)

i have no more data than this, if you want more details, i will try collecting them and give you for clarification.

Hi,

Nobody can help you; you need to hire a chemical engineer. Together with a chemist they should issue a process file with all the chemical reactions taking place in those reactors and utilities needed for your process to manage the exotherms. Without that information it's impossible to support your query.

Good luck

breizh sir

i understand this but can i have any model calculation or steps involved in this ?

because there might be some thumb of rule for all basic calculations. if so can you please refer me any documents or blogs to read more about this.

Hi,

Typically, the type of model you need to build after you get all the process data.

You will need two separate systems, cooling water and a (small) brine system.

Why learn all this?  Does your organization not have ChE process engineers?  With all those RXs, they should!
