Hi all,
Can anyone explain why steam is mixed the gases being combusted in a flare? And secondly, why will air leaking into a flare system cause an explosion?
Thanks

Steam is used to get smokeless flaring. Read all about it on the excellent website of John Zink (http://www.johnzink....ry/Default.aspx).
In a flare header, conditions are usually above the upper explosion limit - there is not enough oxygen for combustion. At the flare tip, oxygen and flare gases are mixed, and ignited by the (pilot) flame. If you get oxygen in your flare stack or header, the mixture could ignite, and will explode because it is confined (by the pipe).
